How Orthodontic Retainers- Fixed
Fixed orthodontic retainers are permanent wires attached to the back of the teeth, usually after braces treatment. They help maintain teeth alignment by preventing shifting. These retainers are discreet, easy to maintain, and provide long-term stability, ensuring that teeth stay in their corrected position after orthodontic treatment.
Orthodontic Retainers- Removable
Removable orthodontic retainers are custom-made devices that help maintain teeth alignment after braces. Made from clear plastic or wire, they are worn as instructed, typically at night, to prevent teeth from shifting. Regular wear and proper care ensure long-term results and maintain the progress made during orthodontic treatment.
Essential Tips for Retainer Care and Long-Lasting Results
- Wear your retainer as instructed: Keep it in at all times until we advise otherwise.
- Remove it when eating: Always place your retainer in its case to avoid losing it—especially in school lunchrooms or restaurants!
- Clean daily: Brush your retainer with a toothbrush and toothpaste using warm (not hot) water. This helps remove plaque and odors. You can also use Efferdent® or other cleaners, but they should complement, not replace, brushing.
- Store properly: When not in use, always keep your retainer in its case. Pets love to chew on them!
- Get used to speaking with it: It may feel awkward at first, but practice speaking, reading, or singing to adjust more quickly.
- Handle with care: Retainers are delicate and can break easily. If it’s lost or damaged, contact us immediately.
- Ask for adjustments: If your retainer feels uncomfortable or needs an adjustment, call us—don’t attempt to adjust it yourself.
- Bring it to appointments: Always remember to bring your retainer to every visit.
- Extend its lifespan: Proper care can help your retainer last for years, saving you from expensive replacements.
- Avoid swimming with it: Always remove your retainer before swimming.
- Avoid extreme temperatures: Keep your retainer away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, washing machines, and napkins.
