Safeguard Your Smile with Mouthguards
Protecting your smile during sports is important for everyone, whether or not you have braces. Mouth and jaw injuries are some of the most common sports-related injuries, but a properly fitted mouthguard can help prevent them.
The American Dental Association recommends wearing a mouthguard for a wide range of activities, including basketball, boxing, hockey, football, gymnastics, lacrosse, martial arts, racquetball, rugby, track and field, skateboarding, skiing and snowboarding, skydiving, soccer, surfing, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting, and wrestling.
Different Options for Mouth Protection
Choosing the right mouthguard is essential for protecting your teeth. There are three main types: pre-made mouthguards, “boil-and-bite” fitted mouthguards, and custom-made mouthguards.
When selecting a mouthguard, look for one that is durable, fits comfortably, and is easy to clean. It should also allow you to breathe easily while wearing it. If you have braces or a retainer, wearing a mouthguard is especially important.
We can guide you on how to wear a mouthguard correctly and help you choose the best one to keep your smile safe.
Caring for Your Mouthguard
Like retainers, braces, or other dental appliances, your mouthguard requires proper care. This includes storing it correctly, keeping it clean, and knowing when it’s time to replace it with a new one.
Here are some simple tips to keep your mouthguard clean and effective:
- After each use, gently clean your mouthguard with a toothbrush and toothpaste.
- Keep your mouthguard stored in a protective case when not in use.
- Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight or hot water, as this can cause it to melt or lose its shape.
- Replace your mouthguard at the start of every new sports season, or sooner if it becomes worn or no longer fits properly.
- Never wear a retainer with your mouthguard. If you have braces, we can help create a mouthguard that protects both your teeth and braces.
- Do not chew on or trim your mouthguard.
- Bring your mouthguard to every dental checkup so we can ensure it remains in good condition.
