The Benefits of Two-Phase Treatment
Two-phase orthodontic treatment is a two-step process that addresses both teeth alignment and jaw development, ensuring a healthier, more lasting smile. Early intervention helps avoid complex treatments later, leading to better, more stable results.
What Happens If Treatment is Delayed?
Postponing orthodontic treatment can lead to more complex procedures in the future and may not fully correct your child’s smile. Early intervention with two-phase treatment helps to avoid more invasive options later on and ensures better, long-term results.
Phase One: Setting the Foundation for a Healthy Smile
The first phase focuses on jaw development, ensuring the upper and lower jaws fit together properly and creating space for permanent teeth. Early signs of jaw issues, such as an overgrown or narrow upper jaw, can be spotted as your child grows.
Children as young as six can benefit from Phase One, especially if they have crowded teeth or jaw misalignment. Early treatment can prevent the need for extractions or surgeries later.
What Happens in Phase One?
During Phase One, we take orthodontic records, including X-rays, photos, and models, to decide on the best appliances and treatment plan. This stage is focused on guiding the jaw’s growth while ensuring adequate space for permanent teeth.
Resting Period
After Phase One, we allow the permanent teeth to erupt naturally. No retainers are typically needed during this phase, as it’s important to let the teeth come in on their own. Regular check-ups every six months ensure healthy development.
Phase Two: Finalizing the Perfect Smile
Phase Two is about positioning the permanent teeth for optimal alignment. At this stage, braces are typically used for full upper and lower teeth alignment. This phase begins once all permanent teeth have erupted.
Duration of Phase Two:
This phase usually takes around 24 months, followed by retainers to maintain the teeth in their newly aligned positions.
Why Opt for Early Treatment?
Starting orthodontic care early helps avoid complicated procedures like extractions or jaw surgery down the road. By addressing orthodontic concerns at an early stage, we can ensure the healthiest, most beautiful smile for your child.
