What is Two-Phase Treatment and Its Benefits?
Two-phase orthodontic treatment is a two-step process designed to address both the alignment of teeth and jaw development. The goal is to ensure an ideal, long-lasting smile while improving overall function. This method allows for a better outcome in terms of both aesthetics and jaw health that remains stable throughout your child’s life.
What Happens If Treatment is Delayed?
Delaying treatment can result in more invasive procedures later on, and may not fully correct your child’s smile. Early intervention with two-phase treatment helps achieve more effective and lasting results.
Phase One: Laying the Foundation for a Healthy Smile
The first phase of treatment focuses on jaw development. This stage helps the upper and lower jaws fit together properly, creating space for permanent teeth. Early signs of jaw problems, such as an overgrown or too narrow upper jaw, are often noticeable as your child grows.
Children as young as six may benefit from Phase One, especially if their front teeth are crowded or there are jaw discrepancies. Early treatment can prevent the need for permanent tooth extractions or future surgeries.
What’s Involved in Phase One?
During Phase One, orthodontic records, including X-rays, photos, and models, are taken to determine the best appliances and treatment duration. The goal is to guide the jaw’s development while creating enough space for permanent teeth.
Resting Period
After Phase One, we allow the permanent teeth to erupt naturally. Retainers aren’t usually needed during this phase, as it’s important to let the teeth find their path. Regular follow-up visits every six months will monitor progress and ensure healthy development.
Phase Two: Finalizing Your Child’s Smile
Phase Two focuses on placing the permanent teeth in their final positions. Braces are typically required for full upper and lower teeth alignment. By this stage, all permanent teeth have erupted, and braces are applied to refine their placement.
Duration of Phase Two:
This phase generally takes about 24 months and is followed by retainers to ensure your child’s teeth stay in their new, perfect positions.
Why Choose Early Treatment?
Early treatment helps avoid complicated procedures later on, like tooth extractions or jaw surgery. By addressing orthodontic issues early, we can guide your child’s teeth and jaw growth to ensure the healthiest and most aesthetically pleasing smile.
