Using Fluoride to Strengthen and Protect Your Teeth
You brush twice a day, floss regularly, and visit the dentist every six months— but did you know that using fluoride can significantly enhance your dental care routine? This natural mineral is crucial in preventing cavities and tooth decay, helping your teeth stay healthy and strong.
Fluoride works by coating your teeth and preventing plaque from building up and hardening on the surface, which can lead to cavities.
Types of Fluoride: Systemic vs. Topical
- Systemic fluoride: This type is ingested, typically through public water supply. It strengthens the tooth enamel while teeth are still forming under the gums, making them more resistant to cavities.
- Topical fluoride: This fluoride is applied directly to your teeth. It’s commonly found in toothpaste, mouthwash, and through professional fluoride treatments at the dentist’s office. This type of fluoride helps prevent cavities (caries) once the teeth have fully emerged.
Fluoride Treatments at the Dentist
In-office fluoride treatments are quick and easy, taking just a few minutes. After the treatment, we recommend that you avoid rinsing, eating, or drinking for at least 30 minutes to allow your teeth to fully absorb the fluoride.
Depending on your dental health needs, you may be advised to receive fluoride treatments every three, six, or twelve months. For ongoing protection, we may also recommend an at-home fluoride product, such as mouthwash, gel, or an antibacterial rinse.
Choosing the Right Fluoride Treatment
When selecting an at-home fluoride product like toothpaste or mouthwash, be sure to look for the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of acceptance. Products with this seal have been rigorously tested for safety and effectiveness.
